The Bommer Spring Hinge Co. was founded in 1876 by Lorenz Bommer, who in 1861 perfected the first double-spring hinge made of brass castings in four sections. In 1893, his son, Emil Bommer, joined the company. The Bommer Playground was founded by the family in 1908 and incorporated in 1926.
